Oxidation resistance and thermal stability of FeSi-NiAl composites
Composite consisting of a NiAl matrix and FeSi reinforcement is being developed as a hard and wear-resistant material that could potentially replace cemented carbides or some tool steels. In its current form, its tribological properties are comparable to common cold-work tool steels, but its advantage is that it does not require heat treatment in the form of quenching and tempering to achieve them. In principle, materials based on silicides and aluminides are also resistant to high-temperature oxidation and exhibit excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Therefore, this work focused on describing the oxidation resistance at a temperature of 800 °C and testing the mechanical properties at this temperature with the possible prospect of using this material also for hot work, for example for forging tools.
